Doctor freed after abortion patient dies

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - December 10, 2010

Dr. Rapin Osathanondh (oh-SATH'-an-on) was released from jail this week after Superior Court Judge Gary Nickerson endorsed a motion to "revise and revoke" his sentence.

Osathanondh pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Barnstable Superior Court in September.

His lawyer, Paul Cirel, tells the Cape Cod Times that Osathanondh must complete nine months of home confinement. He is banned from working as a doctor or teaching medicine ever again.

Laura Hope Smith, a 22-year-old Sandwich woman, never regained consciousness after undergoing an abortion in 2007 at Osathanondh's Hyannis practice.
