Officials say a 22-year-old man was snowboarding at a high speed Friday afternoon when he collided with a 5-year-old girl and her mother who were stopped in the middle of the black diamond Dreadnaught run, which is rated difficult. The man and girl died.

Ski area manager Gary Vantrease said Sunday the girl's mother was hospitalized in critical condition. No names were immediately released.

Vantrease says no one was wearing a helmet, and witnesses said they didn't see the snowboarder try to slow down.

The ski area was closed for Christmas but reopened Sunday.
