A U.S. official says British authorities warned the United States of a possible terror threat to planes flying through the U.K.

The official would not give details, but indicated that British authorities told American counterparts Thursday that they were monitoring all forms of transit in Britain out of caution. The move follows a heightened state of alert that lasted throughout the December holidays. The official insisted on anonymity to discuss the classified matters.

American and European counterterrorism authorities had been tracking intelligence of possible terror attacks in Europe over Christmas and New Year, planned by al-Qaida or its offshoot in Yemen, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
