Authorities say a 15-year-old boy who was hit by a train as he walked along a rail bridge in Long Branch has been rushed to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel tells The Star-Ledger of Newark that the boy, whose identity was withheld, had his hand pinned after a Bayhead-bound train slammed into his arm.

Stessel says emergency crews freed the boy, who was flown to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.

Stessel says it is unclear why the boy and his mother, who was not injured, were walking along the tracks.
