Emergency crews in Carbon County rescued a 14-year-old girl after she fell into a pit during an encounter with a large black bear, officials said.

The victim and two other girls, aged 14 and 12, were hiking in the mountainous area between Lansford and Nesquehoning boroughs on Sunday when the bear approached them, officials said.

The girls tried to run away from the bruin and one of them plunged into the pit. It took authorities about an hour to find her.

The girl, who lives in Lansford, had bruises and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, officials said.

The 12-year-old girl is a Summit Hill resident while the other 14 year old is from Lansford, police said.
