DA: Montco man drugged and raped children

SCHWENKSVILLE, Pa. - July 28, 2011

Sixty-six-year-old Barry McOwen of Schwenksville is charged in Montgomery County with multiple counts of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, child pornography and invasion of privacy.

Investigators McOwen assaulted the girls from 2006 to 2011 The youngest victim was six years old.

"I've seen everything here and I've seen some very disturbing things. When I read this material and saw the info, I thought this was the worst I had ever seen," said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.

Investigators here started looking into McOwen after detectives in Washington State alerted them that he might be trading child pornography online. In June, they raided his apartment on Clemmers Mill Road in Schwenksville, seizing his computer.

According to court documents, they discovered McOwen engaged in explicit online chats where he described "sleep assaults." He allegedly wrote that he drugged his victims with allergy medication then sexually assaulted the girls while they were sleeping or unconscious.

The documents also reveal McOwen's alleged obession with pre-teens, and how he wanted to "grab one at the playground."

Investigators have identified four victims but want to know if there might be more out there.

"The victims here were not random targets. These were not children he abducted or took off the street, but certainly that is a concern - that there may be more victims," said Ferman.

The alleged crimes have stunned the Schwenksville community.

"We all had kids. we all raised kids and to think something like this could happen right here, with kids? It's so bad," said Art Pastorious of Jeffersonville, Pa.

McOwner is being held without bail.
