Pa. man sentenced for shooting cat with crossbow

POTTSVILLE, Pa. - August 3, 2011

A Schuylkill County judge on Tuesday sentenced 37-year-old New Philadelphia resident Patrick Canfield to six months of probation and 150 hours of community service in connection with the incident last August in Lake Wynonah. The cat, named Oscar, survived.

The Republican-Herald of Pottsville reports Canfield told the judge he didn't shoot the cat with the crossbow until it became aggressive and that he doesn't hate cats.

But the cat's owner, Amy Fisher, says it had never shown any aggressive behavior toward anyone. She says she was very disappointed Canfield did not get any prison time.

Canfield pleaded guilty June 6, the day he was to go on trial.
