Former Phillie Matt Stairs plans to retire

TORONTO (AP) - August 3, 2011

The Washington Nationals cut the 43-year-old Stairs on Monday after he hit just .154 with two RBIs and no home runs in 56 games.

Stairs told CBC News on Wednesday he hasn't made an official announcement but plans to retire. He has played 19 seasons with a major league-record 13 teams.

Stairs has 265 career homers, a .262 batting average and 899 RBIs, as well as the record for pinch-hit home runs with 23
