Lehigh Valley job agency cuts staff 20 percent

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - August 4, 2011

The Morning Call newspaper reports the Private Industry Council of the Lehigh Valley has cut 18 workers from its 83-person force. The organization works on job training and helps thousands of people find jobs.

PIC's president, Ed Murray, says the organization will now have fewer people to help others find work. He says he delivered the news to his staff last week. The layoffs include managers, counselors and clerical and maintenance staff.

A spokesman for the state Department of Public Welfare says Gov. Tom Corbett's budget cuts are being used as a convenient scapegoat for many layoffs happening across the state.
