Police ID market owner shot to death in store

WILMINGTON - August 10, 2011

Police say 56-year-old Norman Alhout was working the cash register at approximately 6:53 p.m. Tuesday when two suspects entered the store.

The suspects, at least one of whom was armed with a gun immediately, confronted Alhout and demanded money.

A physical struggle ensued between Alhout and the suspects during which time Alhout was shot one time in the head.

The suspects fled from the store and were last seen running eastbound on 5th Avenue from Maryland Avenue.

The suspects were described as black males dressed all in dark clothing, with dark hoodies pulled up over their heads.

Alhout was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told Action News there were at least 8 people in the store, including customers and the victim's family.

Detectives are continuing to interview several eyewitnesses.

It is not clear if the suspects got away with any money.
