3 die in Pittsburgh flash flooding; cars submerged

PITTSBURGH (AP) - August 19, 2011

Flash floods completely submerged at least six cars near the Pittsburgh Zoo Friday afternoon, station WPXI reports. Rescue crews were using inflatable boats to reach stranded drivers, some of whom told the station that the waters on Washington Boulevard reached a depth of six feet.

The station reports that the area received about 3 inches of rain in an hour, and that some drivers had to swim to safety from their cars.

The flash floods hit an area that experienced serious flooding last month, and the road is currently closed to traffic.

Earlier on Friday, another storm caused power outages that left most of the University of Pittsburgh without electricity.
