Bad weather cuts short search for missing NJ man

BASS RIVER, N.J. - August 22, 2011

Authorities say 59-year-old James W. Ashley of Mays Landing failed to resurface after he went jumped into the water at the mouth of the Wading River in Bass River Township to retrieve a missing fishing line.

The boat's owner notified authorities around 12:35 p.m. The Coast Guard sent a 25-foot small crew response boat from its Barnegat Light station and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from its Atlantic City station.

Their search was called off around 4:30 p.m. because of bad weather.

A side-sonar search was planned for Monday.

State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos, tells The Press of Atlantic City that the odds are against Ashley surviving.
