Temple U giving local students $5M in scholarships

PHILADELPHIA - August 29, 2011

The university announced Monday that the funds will go to 250 students from north Philadelphia over the next decade. Each will receive $5,000 per year for four years.

The program that begins this fall is part of Mayor Michael Nutter's effort to double the percentage of city residents with college degrees.

Census figures from 2009 show that only 23 percent of Philadelphians have at least a bachelor's degree. That's far below cities like San Francisco and Boston, where more than half the residents have undergraduate diplomas.

University President Ann Weaver Hart says the scholarships support "Temple's longstanding commitment to educate Philadelphians and provide access to all."
