Woman found dead inside home with 5 pit bulls

HUNTING PARK - August 31, 2011

Police were called to the 300 block of Carey Street around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for a radio call of a person screaming.

They entered the home with fire department personnel and found a 50 year old woman. She was pronounced dead at 6:45 pm.

"The female had severe trauma to her head, her face, and her neck, and also had injuries to her chest and her one leg," said Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police.

Police say her 55 year old husband came home from work and discovered her body and called 911.

Homicide detectives and the crime scene unit scoured the scene Tuesday night and found a number of objects including a rock and a sledge hammer. Police say it's unclear if she was defending herself from a person or her pets.

Her husband was among the people police were interviewing.

"We had him transported to homicide as a witness to find out what occurred. it's very unusual for pit bulls to kill their owner. It's very unusual for a person to die from a dog bite," Small said.

An autopsy on Wednesday will be performed to determine the woman's cause of death.

Animal control officers were called to the home to remove the dogs.
