Ocean City BYOB issue pulled from ballot

OCEAN CITY, N.J. - September 1, 2011

Supporters on Wednesday pulled the question from the November ballot to rework the wording after the city threatened a lawsuit over the language.

The proposal limited the amount of alcohol patrons could bring to a single bottle of wine or six-pack of beer per customer. The city said that exceeded the city's authority over alcohol.

Petitioner Jane Custer told The Press of Atlantic City supporters will collect at least 498 signatures to get the reworked question placed before voters during the nonpartisan election in May.

Ocean City has been a dry town since its founding in 1879 by a group of Methodist ministers.
