Court: Pa. judge violated state Constitution

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - September 1, 2011

The Pennsylvania Court of Judicial Discipline on Monday found Allentown-based Maryesther Merlo brought disrepute on the judiciary. She was suspended without pay in December.

The complaint filed against Merlo last year claimed she frequently berated defendants, including one she told one defendant to call himself a "scumbag." The judicial conduct board says on another occasion Merlo promised to dismiss a traffic violation for a man if he married his pregnant girlfriend.

The Morning Call of Allentown reports Merlo's attorney says he will ask the court to reverse its findings.

A date for a sanction hearing is pending.
