It happened on the 5400 block of north second street shortly after 6pm in the Olney section of Philadelphia..
Police encountered a man fitting the general description of a man being sought in connection with two robberies.
As police approached, the man fled, leading police on a two block foot chase.
The confrontation ended when the man took cover behind a house and opened fire. Police returned fire, striking the man.
He was pronounced dead by medics at the scene.
One of the robberies the man was suspected in occurred just 20-minutes prior to police encountering him.
There were no injuries to the officers and no identity on the man killed.
