Pa. Turnpike section reopens after flooding

HARRISBURG, Pa. - September 9, 2011

Turnpike officials say the toll road reopened to traffic between the Harrisburg East and Reading interchanges around 6 a.m. Friday.

The turnpike had closed Thursday evening because floodwaters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee jeopardized the safety of a bridge over the Swatara Creek in hard-hit Dauphin County.

Officials say the water level dropped enough overnight to allow engineers to check the bridge's structural integrity and confirm it is safe to carry traffic.
