2 dead, police shoot gunman in Grays Ferry

GRAYS FERRY - September 28, 2011

Investigators say it may be a case of rival gangs going after one another that may have begun Sunday night.

Police say it was shortly after 8:30 p.m. that 17th District police officers reported to a man shot in the head in the 1500 block of South 26th Street.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A short time later they get report of shots fired nearby on the 3100 block of Tasker Avenue.

Upon arriving there, police found two other shooting victims, a woman shot in the face and a man shot in the head lying on the sidewalk.

They were both taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where the man died and the woman remains in critical condition.

"When 17th district officers arrived on location in the 3100 block of Tasker, they actually observed a male with a gun in his hand firing shots at a male who was lying on the sidewalk," Philadephia Police Inspector Scott Small said.

Small says the officer ordered the suspect to drop the gun, but he refused. The gunman then raised the weapon and fired several shots at the police.

Police returned fire striking the gunman in the torso.

Then investigators say the suspect ran and threw a gun under a car parked in the 1500 block of South 32nd Street.

"Then the male continued to run from police and tried to enter a car at 32nd and Dickinson streets when this male was apprehended by police," Small said. The suspect is hospitalized in stable condition.

No officers were injured.

Police tell Action News they have recovered a weapon.
