Corbett would let counties impose drilling fee

PITTSBURGH - October 3, 2011

Corbett told a crowd at a carpenters' training facility Monday in Pittsburgh that the new jobs and lower energy bills from tapping the Marcellus Shale formation will spread across the state.

Part of the plan involves allowing counties to impose an impact fee to help pay for the cost to regulate the drilling and fix the damage it causes to the environment.

Most of the money would remain in drilling communities for a wide range of uses, while 25 percent would go to the state for environmental protection, road and bridge improvements, emergency response, pipeline safety and more.
