Commission postpones vote on gas drilling rules

WEST TRENTON, N.J. - October 7, 2011 The commission has been trying to create rules that would allow drilling but protect water quality in the Delaware River and its tributaries.

It announced Friday that a vote scheduled for Oct. 21 has been moved to Nov. 21. Hundreds of advocates on both sides are planning to take buses to the voting session.

Environmentalists say the proposed rules are too weak. But many in the gas-drilling industry say they will unfairly restrict business.

In the meantime, no drilling is allowed in parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey governed by the commission.

There are major supplies of gas underground in New York and Pennsylvania.
