Officer hurt when cruiser struck at DWI checkpoint

HOLMDEL, N.J. - October 8, 2011

The officer, whose name wasn't disclosed, was taken to Bayshore Community Hospital following Friday night's crash. He was treated there for neck and back injuries and later released.

Authorities say the cruiser was stopped - with its overhead lights flashing - in a southbound lane of Route 35 in Holmdel when it was struck around 11:40 p.m. by a car driven by 18-year-old Union Beach resident. At the time, officers were setting up traffic cones and signs about the checkpoint.

The driver faces numerous charges, including driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana. His 19-year-old passenger faces drug possession charges.
