The man was identified Sunday as 37-year-old Timothy Vettori of Newark.
Police say the engineer of the southbound train saw Vettori standing on the tracks with a bicycle shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday. The engineer applied the emergency brake but was unable to stop before striking Vettori. Police say they don't know why he was on the tracks, but no foul play is suspected.
