Elderly man killed after truck hits power chair

BENSALEM, Pa. - October 20, 2011

At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Bensalem police responded to the 2200 block of Street Road for a vehicle-pedestrian accident.

Police say a 1994 Chevy pickup truck driven by a 65-year-old Bensalem resident was traveling westbound on Street Road within the outside lane.

82-year-old Raymond Smith of Bristol Borough was operating a Jazzy Power Chair traveling from the south side of Street Road to the north side in the area of the old Armstrong Middle School.

Authorities say the Jazzy crossed the eastbound traffic lanes of Street Road and entered the center turn lane.

A motorist traveling within the inside westbound lane stopped for the Jazzy.

The Jazzy then crossed north in front of that vehicle and entered the outside westbound lane.

The Chevy truck then made contact with the Jazzy.

The power chair and Raymond Smith were thrown to the north shoulder of the street.

Smith was transported to Aria Hospital Torresdale Division where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Police say speed and impairment do not appear to be factors.

They say the Jazzy was not crossing within a crosswalk.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cpl. Brian Oliverio or Ofc. Jen Stahl at 215-633-3719.
