Parenting Perspective: Classes for new moms

October 24, 2011

Can I do yoga during pregnancy? Should I try a dula during childbirth?

Is a baby sling or ERGO carrier a good choice? Can I pull off breastfeeding, and if so, which pump will fit me and work the best?

If you just walk in a baby store and look at products on the shelves, there's not often someone to answer very personal questions about fit, quality and convenience.

Most moms just randomly pick out a product, ask their friends, or buy a few and hope one works.

Now there's a place that offers free classes to help you and your partner sort through the choices and products. It's called Belly Pilates in Bryn Mawr.

Owner Kelly McBride organizes free Sunday workshops for small groups.

During the classes, different experts offer tips on every topic from nutrition, to sleep solutions for the sleepless nights.

"Smart moms out there want to be educated so that they know what's in front of them, to avoid the pitfalls of motherhood. They're being really proactive and their living healthier more natural and holistic lifestyle these days," said McBride.

The classes run through November at the Chetwynd Drive location and you can go to one or several.

Couples often come together. Some women already have newborns at home and other moms are expecting.

Everyone seems to have questions that neither their gynecologist nor ObGyn has answered and the products are lined up for you to look at, try on and test out.

"No one's trying to sell you anything. She's there to educate you, to get you to understand what the best fit would be. What fits your lifestyle? Are you a working mom? Are you a mom that stays home? These are all questions that a Toys-R-Us representative might not have the experience to ask," said McBride.

Pre-registration is required so organizers know how many people to plan for.

Attendees also get free gift bags and coupons from local and national companies.

By the looks of things, it seems to take some of the mystery out of motherhood.
