Kidney stones may indicate type 2 diabetes

October 27, 2011

Researchers studied more than 90,000 Taiwanese adults. Those with a history of kidney stones were about 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than people without stones.

Even when the researchers accounted for age, obesity and other health factors, kidney stones were still linked to a one-third higher risk of developing diabetes.

The exact reason is uncertain. But it is suspected certain processes in the body may contribute to both conditions.

The report is in the November issue of the Journal of Urology.
