The cuts are expected to eliminate 9,000 civilian positions nationwide.
Other civilian jobs at the Dover base have gone unfilled and more will be vacated through early retirements or other moves.
Second Lt. Jennifer Guerrero, a spokeswoman for the 436th Airlift Wing, says work is under way to minimize the impact on those who are in jobs targeted for elimination.
The Dover base is southern Delaware's largest single work site and one of the military's largest cargo hubs.
Air Force officials say the cuts at bases across the country are being made to save money and increase efficiency and that they will be gradual.
