Arlington Cemetery execs brief senator on reforms

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - November 4, 2011

Cemetery officials briefed Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., on Friday about ongoing reform efforts following revelations last year of more than 200 misidentified gravesites.

The cemetery says it has so far checked 86 percent of the grave markers. None of those checks has revealed any problems in terms of knowing who is buried where.

But they have found tens of thousands of gravesites that reveal discrepancies between headstones and paperwork on details like a correct date of birth or misspelled name.

McCaskill, who had been a leading critic of the cemetery's management, said she is encouraged by the improvements.
