Latest airline fare increase seen failing

DALLAS (AP) - November 4, 2011

Most airlines decided not to go along, and those that had raised prices earlier this week began rolling them back on Friday.

US Airways raised fares by up to $10 per round trip on higher-priced tickets usually favored by business travelers. Delta Air Lines matched the increase but decided to abandon it Friday, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Jamie Baker. He says US Airways has started rolling back its fare increase, too.

The airlines raised prices two weeks ago. Another increase last week failed after low-cost carriers declined to match it. U.S. airlines have managed about 10 broad fare increases this year.
