Guru to be sentenced in Arizona sweat lodge deaths

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - November 18, 2011

James Arthur Ray is set to be sentenced Friday in Prescott on three counts of negligent homicide. His motivational mantra drew dozens of people to Sedona in October 2009 where they took part in the ceremony meant to purify their bodies.

Three people - 38-year-old Kirby Brown, of Westtown, N.Y.; 40-year-old James Shore, of Milwaukee; and 49-year-old Liz Neuman, of Prior Lake, Minn. - died.

Ray's supporters and defense team say probation is best for the man whose teachings have bettered people's lives.

Prosecutors and the victims' families want Ray sentenced to the maximum nine years in prison.

The judge will consider victim impact statements before sentencing Ray.
