Mrs. Fixit: Faux Mercury Glass

December 10, 2011

Pick up a couple of glass hurricanes or vases from your local dollar store or thrift shop and a can of metallic silver or mirrored spray paint from your local craft or hardware store.

Wrap the outside of the hurricane with plastic wrap to protect it from any overspray.

Use an old toothbrush to spritz a little water into the inside of the hurricane.

Then, gently spray a thin layer of the metallic spray paint into to hurricane and let it dry completely.

Mercury glass generally has some black patina to it. To recreate this layer, pull on some latex gloves and use the toothbrush to spritz a little watered down black craft paint inside and use an old rag to dab it back off. When you're happy with the patina, let it dry.

Finally add another thin layer of the spray paint to the inside of the vase.

That's it, such an easy and inexpensive project for a great one of a kind look in your home! I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple!
