Pedestrian struck in fiery police-involved accident

GERMANTOWN - December 4, 2011

The accident happened at 1:43 a.m. Sunday as the officers responded to an incident at the Crab House Restaurant and Nightclub on the 5700 block of Germantown Avenue.

Police say a fight broke out inside of the club and at least one shot was fired. Patrons say the bar was too crowded to see the gunman.

An unidentified man was wounded in the gunfire. He was taken Temple University Hospital in serious condition.

The police vehicle was traveling north on Broad en route back to the 39th District after transporting a DUI prisoner.

While en route back to the district, the officers responded to a radio call to assist an officer at the restaurant shooting.

Police say the overhead lights and sirens were activated as they continued north on Broad Street.

As the police vehicle approached the intersection of Broad and Girard, police say a pedestrian ran from west to east into the path of the police vehicle.

The patrol car struck the pedestrian

It was reported that the pedestrian was running to board a stopped Septa Bus which was also traveling north on Broad Street.

In an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian, the driving officer steered to the left. In doing so, the police vehicle mounted a center median and continued north on Broad Street.

As a result of the damages sustained from contacting the median, the police vehicle's engine compartment became engulfed in flames.

Both officers were able to safely exit the vehicle.

The 26-year-old female pedestrian was transported to Hahnemann Hospital and admitted in stable condition with a possible broken arm and trauma to the torso area.

Both officers were transported to Hahnemann and treated and released with complaints of pain.
