Pay 6 Forward: Brooklawn, N.J.

BROOKLAWN, N.J. - November 30, 2011

With less than 2,000 people in this Camden County Borough, we got the impression everyone knows each other and they seem to help each other too.

So, we talked to many who wanted to pay 6 forward. Surprisingly, Mary Gray wasn't interested in helping her best friend, or her next door neighbor. Just a lady she often sees in the local grocery store.

"Her name is Kathy," Gray told Action News. "She is raising her daughter, two grandsons and her husband was killed. He was coming home from work last year and he went off a cliff and they found his car... It was devastating."

Suddenly alone, Kathy Pearson is raising three kids under the age of 9. Mary had never even been to Kathy's home. So she was pretty surprised to see us.

"I don't know why you thought of me but you're my angel," Kathy said as Gray and the Action News team arrived.

All Kathy could say is that she felt humbled by this surprise.

"I've just been struggling by myself with the help of my nephew and just been making ends meet. I had to give up my job to take care of these kids and I just do what I have to do."

Kathy certainly has her hands full. Her grandsons have developmental challenges. At times she struggled just to get out of bed. But the kids give her a reason to keep going.
