Officer in hit and run ID'd, suspect arrested

PHILADELPHIA - December 3, 2011

The victim has been identified as Officer Kim Kleposki.

The name of the suspect, pictured above, has not been released.

The accident happened near 10th and Sansom streets just before 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Authorities say Officer Kleposki was working on a construction detail outside of the hospital when she was struck and critically injured by a driver violating the traffic restrictions.

Doctors from Jefferson rushed out of the hospital to treat the female officer, who has been upgraded to stable condition.

According to Lt. Ray Evers, two traffic officers were manning the construction detail when they witnessed a 2003 Ford Focus driving recklessly through the construction zone and attempted to stop her.

"They approached the vehicle and started talking to the female driver. It was obvious to the officers that the female driver was intoxicated. When the officer asked the female to get out of the car, the driver took off, striking the officer, and because of the construction scene, the car could not go any further, she backed up and struck the officer again," explained Lt. Evers.

Police say the suspect fled the scene, but was later arrested in Haddon Township, New Jersey.

The suspect will face DUI charges in New Jersey and be extradited back to Philadelphia where she will face charges of assault on a police officer.

Police say Officer Kleposki's husband is also a Philadelphia police officer.
