Police tell The Times of Trenton that a resident saw the child around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers and child welfare officials then went to the toddler's home and found another child, whose age and gender weren't disclosed.
The children's mother, 23-year-old Mary Squires of Trenton, was found later Saturday and told authorities she had left the children with a friend on Friday. Squires said the friend called her later that night and told her to come home, but Squires declined and said the friend apparently had left the children alone.
The children were unharmed and placed in state custody.
A telephone number for Squires could not be found Sunday.
