Shipping companies face busiest day of the year

PHILADELPHIA - December 12, 2011

FedEx alone projects a record 17 million shipments worldwide and nearly 20,000 workers were hired to handle the volume.

"We prepare for 11 months for today," said FedEx's Tim Norton.

Shipping companies are slammed because online retailers are sending out a lot of packages today.

Many brick-and-mortar retailers are also having shipments delivered today so they're stocked up through Christmas Eve.

If you've decided to have your gifts shipped via online retailers, you'll appreciate this good news – Friday, Dec. 16 is Free Shipping Day.

More than 2000 merchants are participating and offering shipping at no cost.

Order before the deadline, otherwise you may have to pay extra to have your packages shipped.

The standard shipping deadline for some online retailers is as soon as today.

Of course, if you're a true procrastinator, don't worry too much, other Christmas deadlines are:

  • Friday, Dec.16 for FedEx Ground
  • Thursday, Dec. 15 for USPS Parcel Post
  • Tuesday, Dec. 20 for USPS First Class Mail
  • Wednesday, Dec. 21 for USPS Priority Mail
  • Thursday, Dec. 22 for USPS Express Mail

For UPS and FedEx, you can wait until Dec. 23 for overnight and Saturday delivery but customers will be charged.
