Armed 'hungry bandits' target Trenton NJ

TRENTON, N.J. - January 25, 2012

The so-called 'hungry bandits' have struck 4 times in 8 days. On Tuesday, they hit Original Dominick's Pizza on Sanhican Drive.

Police say they entered the store yelling "don't move" and fired off a shot at an employee that dented a food case and blew a hole right through a plastic tray.

"He missed, thank God," said Trenton Police Officer Pete Szpakowski. "In response to that, the employee grabbed every knife in his reach and just kept throwing them at the suspect."

That employee quit after the incident, but Wilson Estrada showed us the meat cleavers and long knives his co-worker threw at the robbers to chase them away.

"Very scared, yeah," Original Dominick's owner, Manuel Gomes, told Action News. "He quit. He's not coming back."

Police are trying to find out if the duo that tried to rob this pizza store are the same pair who pulled off three other fast food robberies since January 16th.

Delivery men from Domino's, a restaurant called China Café and DeVito's Pizza in South Trenton have been held up by two masked gunmen brandishing sawed-off shot guns and handguns who steal their money and their food..

"They took the pizza and the $40 he had in his pocket," said DeVito's Pizza owner Vince Loduca. "And the guy didn't work since last Friday because he was shaken up."

"It's frightening when you see a sawed-off shotgun pointed at you," said delivery man James Douglas. "And you don't know, these young guys, they will shoot you. That's the bottom line. They don't care."

"Very scared, yeah," said China Café owner Shung Wing. As a result of these armed robberies Wing has stopped deliveries after 8:00 p.m. And the owner of DeVito's Pizza says he checks caller ID as a precaution.

Officer Szpakowski has this advice for drivers: "If anything looks suspicious to you or you just have that feeling, drive away."

Trenton Police say they are working on some leads and ask anyone with information about the 'hungry bandits' to call them immediately.
