Police: Suicide believed in burned-out car death

CHARLESTOWN TWP., Pa. - February 1, 2012

The small subcompact car was found behind the Chester Valley Grange, a farmer's association building located off the 3200 block of Phoenixville Pike. It is a building, authorities say, is rarely used.

It was just after 5:00 p.m. that someone called 911 to report a car had exploded.

"The call came in, somebody saw a car on fire and they heard a noise which they described as an explosion and then they just see the car drift backwards," Cpl. Michelle Swanton of the Pennsylvania State Police said.

It was after firefighters arrived on the scene that they discovered there was a body inside the car, the person apparently incinerated. Hazmat and ATF agents were called to assist in the investigation.

Police say items found at the scene lead them to believe the man inside took his own life.
