Manhunt in deadly Hunting Park store shooting

HUNTING PARK - March 19, 2012

Police say it was around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when four gunmen enterted La Familia Latina, a convenience store located along the 3300 block of North 5th Street.

During the course of the attempted robbery one of the gunmen, identified by police as Edward Friedland, allegedly shot store clerk Antonio Menegro once in the right side of the stomach. However, the 38-year-old clerk fired back at the suspect, striking him at least once.

After Friedland was hit and fled the store, a customer who was in the store at the time gave chase. Police say Rafael Ramos Delvalle is the 26-year-old Good Samaritan and friend of the store owner, who went after Friedland.

Police say Delvalle got about a block from the store when he was shot execution-style by a still-unidentified accomplice of Friedland's.

The alleged gunman, seen clearly in a surveillance photo, remained at large Monday night.

Manegro, the store owner, remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday night.

Friedland, the accused masked gunman, is hospitalized as well after being driven to a hospital by a friend who is now in police custody.

The man who will be charged with killing the Good Samaritan remains on the lam. Police hope that surveillance picture of him will generate tip calls as to his identity and location.

Police say as Delvalle chased the fleeing criminals, Friedland dropped his gun, and the weapon was picked up by another suspect who turned, fired at Ramos-Delvalle and killed him.

The suspects then fled the scene in a gold Buick SUV. They abandoned the vehicle at 3500 North 5th Street.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey tells Action News that the store owner had a license to carry a fire arm.
