Great Dane mauls 5-year-old boy in the Lehigh Valley

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - May 24, 2012

Whitehall Township Police Lieutenant Ribello Bertoni said it happened on Sunday afternoon at the child's friend's house on Catasauqua Road.

An investigation revealed that the dogs were in the back yard. The friend's mother asked the children to remain outside while she secured the dogs in the basement. Officers say the boy wandered in before the mother had a chance to secure the dogs. That's when, police say, the dog bit the boy in the neck.

Lieutenant Ribello Bertoni said, "It is unusual. In 25 years of law enforcement it's the first great dane bite that I've seen. Normally we deal with other types."

Police say it appears the boy will fully recover. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Dog Law Enforcement Office is expected to follow-up on the case.
