The Reading Eagle reports an 18-year-old man from South Heidelberg Township was in the custody of city police Friday evening. Authorities have not released the driver's identity.
Meanwhile the family of Ja'Lexy Bobet is still trying to cope with the loss. The young girl was struck at the intersection of 10th and Cotton streets.
"He just left her there like she's trash. She was a beautiful girl," said Nancy Roman, the victim's aunt.
Around 7:00 p.m., neighbors looked on as the young victim was loaded onto an ambulance and were shocked that the driver who cause this tragedy was nowhere to be found.
"They just ran her over and just kept going. Didn't even stop - guys there yelling mad loud talking 'yo-stop-stop' but they just kept going," said Michael Roman.
Nearby security cameras captured images of a burnt orange dodge pickup truck leaving the scene.
Investigators say the light-skinned male driver was traveling east on Cotton Street when he blew a stop sign and hit the little girl as she was making her way back home.
"See that's why I tell you, it's very important - wait for mom and don't cross," said Nancy.
It's a lesson learned by many of the children in the Reading neighborhood where the young girl lived.
The community is hoping the tragedy will also stop drivers from carelessly speeding through the streets.
