Power returning for NJ residents affected by storms

TRENTON, N.J. - July 8, 2012

Nearly 70,000 customers lost service when the severe storms hit around 9 p.m. Saturday. The storms, containing lightning and strong winds that gusted more than 70 mph, knocked down numerous trees and power lines across the region.

Jersey Central Power & Light says more than 39,000 Monmouth County customers lost power at the height of the storm, while more than 25,000 in Ocean County had no service.

By early Sunday afternoon, about 14,350 customers still had no electricity.

The storms came just a week after similar storms hit in Atlantic and Cape May counties, knocking out power to about 206,000 customers.
