Del. county, residents working out prayer dispute

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - July 11, 2012

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports both sides have requested until at least next week to resolve a dispute over the use of prayer at council meetings.

Four county residents complained in court that the council was endorsing Christianity by opening meetings with The Lord's Prayer. The judge gave the parties time to settle the lawsuit, and said he'd order the county to change unless they settled the case.

Lawyers for both sides reported last week that the council had replaced the prayer with Psalm 23, which is found in the Old Testament. But the lawyers also said the "parties differ on the constitutionality of this replacement."
