NE Pa. lawmaker charged with assaulting wife

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - jULY 24, 2012

Scranton police say state Rep. Kevin Murphy slapped his wife then punched her male friend and put him in a choke hold outside his home on Friday night.

Police say Murphy was "heavily intoxicated" during the altercation and fled the home before turning himself in on Saturday.

Murphy declined comment when reached by The Times-Tribune of Scranton (http://bit.ly/PQAMw4 ) on Monday.

A phone message left for Murphy's attorney wasn't immediately returned Tuesday morning.

Murphy is a Democrat in his second term representing the 113th District. He lost a primary battle in April and his term ends Nov. 30.
