Storms knock out power for some NJ residents

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - July 29, 2012

Storms packing heavy rains and lightning hit Monmouth and Ocean counties early Saturday afternoon. Lakewood appeared to be the hardest-hit municipality, along with Toms River and Brick Townships.

About 30,000 customers overall lost power during the storms.

On Sunday morning, PSE and G reported about 500 customers still without power, mostly in Mercer County.

Atlantic City Electric reported about 300 customers still without power, mostly in Atlantic County.

Jersey Central Power and Light says roughly 5,400 customers were still without electricity as of 11 a.m. Sunday, though all customers were expected to have their service restored by late Sunday afternoon.

The storms also damaged several tents and the grounds at the Monmouth County Fair in Freehold Township, forcing officials to cancel the fair's final day of events on Sunday.
