Suspected carjacker arrested after NJ chase

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. - July 30, 2012

At 6:20 p.m. Gloucester County dispatch was notified by Vineland police that their patrol units viewed a stolen car in the area of West Boulevard and the driver of the car was armed.

Franklin Township police patrol units responded to the area and located the vehicle, a 2000 silver Acura, which was reported stolen by Vineland police.

According to police, it had been involved in a carjacking earlier today.

Patrol units observed the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of Gonzalez Park located on Malaga Park Drive.

Officer Eric Piper attempted to apprehend the driver, who was sitting inside the car.

That is when, police say, the vehicle fled through a playground area and out onto Malaga Park Drive.

Additional units attempted to stop the vehicle, but the Acura fled north on Malaga Park Drive towards Delsea Drive at a high rate of speed.

While attempting a turn, police say the vehicle crashed into a tree on the northbound shoulder of Delsea Drive.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 30-year-old Moses Rios of Vineland.

Rios was taken into custody and airlifted to Cooper University Medical Center for injuries sustained during the crash.

He is wanted in Vineland for robbery, carjacking and related offenses.

Additional charges are pending in Franklin Township, including eluding police, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a CDS and numerous traffic violations.
