A South Jersey mayor is in trouble with the law for allegedly speeding down a Gloucester County road while drunk.

Police say the East Greenwich Mayor Fred Grant was going 91 in a 45 mile per hour zone on Kings Highway Tuesday night.

The chief of police tells Action News it took an officer a mile just to catch up with Grant.

Officers say the mayor's blood alcohol level was above the legal limit and he failed a field sobriety test.

Grant has been charged with DWI.

The mayor has apologized, telling a local paper, "I was wrong."
