New charges in Calif. professor arson case

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - August 8, 2012

Orange County prosecutors announced Wednesday that UC Irvine pharmaceutical sciences professor Rainer Reinscheid will face several additional counts.

He now is charged with eight counts of arson, one count of attempted arson, and one misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer. Arraignment was continued to Aug. 15.

Authorities say Reinscheid committed small arsons targeting the school, an assistant principal's home and the park where the son hanged himself last March.

Authorities say they also discovered emails in which Reinscheid plotted mass murder and destruction of the school.

If convicted, Reinscheid could face up to 21 years and eight months in prison.
