Phila. officer critically wounds armed suspect

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - August 12, 2012

Around 1:45 Sunday morning, Philadelphia and Temple University officers responded to the report of a man armed with a gun on the 1300 block of North 8th Street.

Temple police arrived on the scene first and found a 24-year-old man with a gun, running down the 700 block of Thompson Street.

Officers went in pursuit and the suspect allegedly pointed his gun at police.

Before the man could fire his weapon, a Philadelphia officer from the 26th district opened fire, striking the suspect twice in the head and once in the neck.

The suspect was taken via ambulance to Hahnemann Hospital in critical condition.

Police tell Action News that they recovered a handgun at the scene.

Still no word on why the man was armed.
