Officer Brad Fox succumbed to his injures after being shot in the head responding to the hit-and run crash, Ferman said.

"Today we are here to announce a tragedy," Ferman began the press conference.

Fox was a 7-year veteran of the force and recently graduated from the Philadelphia K-9 Unit.

Ferman said the suspect was shot and killed.

Fox's K-9 officer Nick was also shot, but survived.

Fox's death marked the first time a Plymouth Township police officer was killed in the line of duty.

Fox leaves behind a wife and a young child. He and his wife were expecting their second child.

"There are just no words that can begin to express the magnitude of this tragedy...for his family, his wife, for his beautiful little girl," Ferman said.

He was to turn 35 years old tomorrow.
